Horse Year 2014 Investment Philosophy

The tumbling of stocks markets worldwide yesterday (27 January 2014) which followed the similar direction by the US stock markets on 24 January 2014 set markets on a realistic footing for Horse Year 2014, in my belief. For quite some time, many analysts have been giving their good outlook for Singapore stocks, dishing out names like Ezion, Nam Cheong, Osim, Mermaid Maritime, etc … I think I have read too many such reports so much so that I can recite most of these recommended stocks.

Of Gardens & Investing

I read an article today and I was rather impressed by a phrase so much so that I would like to share it with readers. Here the phrase goes: “The Mind is Like a Garden”. I know once I say this phrase out, you must have thought that I have become very “bo liao” (boring) so much so that I actually come out with something not related to investments on this blog, and to have Gardens somemore, is it that I have been to Gardens By the Bays? Hmm, no, please wait for my explanation on how this phrase is related to investing and how this phrase is actually an important concept in investing.

SMRT stock results

SMRT reported its results today. The results are: SMRT’s 3QFY14 PATMI Declined 44.1% on $9 million Fare Losses. Net tangible asset per share is 50.8 cents as at 31 Dec 13, with basic earnings per share as at 3rd quarter FY14 at 0.9 cents.

I am not surprised at SMRT stock results announced. SMRT as a stock is of interest to me as there are so many interesting factors coming into play on this stock.

Chinatown Chinese New Year 2014

I went to Chinatown last Saturday 25 January 2014, mingling with the crowds which thronged the various streets of Chinatown. I always go to Chinatown during Chinese New Year periods as it is really a festive feeling looking at the sights, smells and sounds of Chinese New Year.

Singapore Stocks headed south & my Investment journey

As I have expected, the Singapore’s stocks market headed south today (on 27 January 14) in a similar fashion after US stocks headed down by an average of 2% on last Friday (24 January 14). When the US markets became euphoric in December 2013, I know that there will be a correction in the US markets at some time like what we saw on 24 January 2013. I have also known that investors’ confidence will be jittery whenever the US Federal Reserves meets but for this time round, we have concerns over the perceived slowing economic-growth of China coinciding with the meeting of the US Federal Reserves too.

I am a retail Investor

I have been writing about wealth and finance creation and management on this blog and I know that some of you may find that what I write does not correspond with the title of the blog, meaning Singapore stocks investing. I mean with a blog title as such, one will usually think of a blog which doles out insights and tips on when to enter and exit a stock and what stocks to buy, etc but it seems that this blog touches only very lightly on the above.

US stocks went down by 2%

Yesterday, there was a noticeable heading of south in the US markets. The S&P 500 went 2.09% south and this was followed by 2.15% in the same direction of Nasdaq and 1.96% in the same direction of Dow. Against the aforementioned backdrop, it is not hard to gauge how STI will perform next week.

Hutchinson Port Holdings stock

I sold off Hutchinson Port Holdings stock this afternoon at USD $0.67. I have bought this stock at USD $0.68 in December 2013. I sold off the stock as the performance of this stock did not really meet my expectations and looking around the market, I saw some good stocks oversold and hence I thought of liquidating the capital in my Hutchinson Port Holdings stocks for investments in these stocks as well.

How to buy a Vacuum Cleaner & the financial lessons from the buying?

I bought a vacuum cleaner. I did not have a vacuum cleaner prior to my purchase and all along, I have wanted to procure one. However, I keep delaying my purchase of the vacuum cleaner so much so that it is now near Chinese New Year and I feel the motivation to buy one, especially for spring cleaning. As experiences from my Chinese New Years’ spring cleanings have gleaned, the spring cleanings always for sure draw out those very minute microscopic or fine particulate dust materials which could not be “captured” by the husks of my hardworking broom; hence I bought a vacuum cleaner this year for a more effective cleaning. You may ask me what has my experience of buying a vacuum cleaner got to do with this blog? Well if you are to buy something good and cheap and in the process, save some monies and become wiser, don’t you think it is something along in the line of wealth creation in the sense that a dollar saved is a dollar earned and that wealth is not confined to just monetary but overall wealth as a whole comprising the health and spiritual aspects as well?

Rising costs of living on wallets

This morning, I purchased a bag of fruits from a supermarket. I was really surprised that the price of the fruits has become $1.20, a 21.2% increase from its original 99-cents selling price. This is not the only observation of rising food prices. For example, my nasi lemak usually bought from a nearby food stall has also experienced a 7% price increase to three dollars. And if the above are not sufficient to convince me that prices are increasing, it is reported that public transport operators will increase fares of trains and buses as well.

I would expect higher quality from public services providers to commensurate with higher fees, however, my experiences yesterday on public transport providers is anything but satisfactory. I mean I am not referring to the glitches on the North-South MRT line which caused inconveniences to an estimated 19,000 commuters. For my encounter, I waited for close to thirty minutes for my bus yesterday evening and when the bus came, another bus of the same service number arrived at the same time!

I would also expect no less than the same quality of food for higher selling food prices too. But what I have eaten yesterday evening is typical of what I (have no choice but to) eat on most of my working days: a very tasty fried fish soup, only to have me gulping glasses and glasses of water after the meal to quench the MSG-induced thirst. Nice, healthy and good-priced hawker foods are rare and these stalls are often packed with long queues.

Investing strategies for year 2014

I have an itch to enter the stock markets after looking at how some equities are trading at quite an attractive valuation. I am not sure what causes the itch, is it speculation or logic? To test whether is it either … I refrained from buying the stock which I feel itchy about and then the next day, the price of the stock went further south or was not changed. While I heaved a sign of relief from not entering into the stock, I wonder whether my trading strategy needs to be refined even further.

How not to be a millionaire and achieve financial goals?

I have been reading, both online and offline on strategies which one can use to make a million of dollars, that is become a millionaire in our Singapore society. A million dollars is $1,000,000 and while one can save to achieve this million-dollar goal, for many with an average income say $4,000, it will take many years, especially after one deducts his or her monthly expenditure. If one earns $4,000 and saves half of his or her income (which will work out to be $2,000), it will take that person about 42 years to achieve a million of dollars in his bank account. If that person starts young, he will be around 60 years old to achieve a million dollars in savings.

My Investment Strategies

In light of the current market conditions, I would have to re-examine my trading strategies used so that they remain relevant and responsive to the stock markets that we have today. I will be lying to you if I were to tell you that I am a very brilliant trader or an investor who wins all trades. Yes, I believe there are some trading experts out there earning their good salaries from trading per se, but even among them, I believe they experience a number of trades which are non-profit but they manage their trades in such a way that the probability of winning trades is greater than that of non-winning trades.

40% of married couples receive help from their parents to buy flats

The news of this week contain quite a number of news related to property prices and COVs. Indeed, COVs have reduced, but I could not help but think about a report which I read in January 2013.

In the report, it was reported a young couple applied for an executive condominium costing $722,000 through the help of a loan of $144,400 from the gentleman’s father as a 20% down payment as the couple has only $15,000 in their savings and earn $5,300 together.

Kim Heng Offshore & Marine Holdings is launching its IPO. Kim Heng Offshore & Marine Holdings is inviting 174,000,000 Invitation Shares of which three million shares will be open to public for application at S$0.25 each. Let us look at the businesses of Kim Heng Offshore & Marine Holdings; I will give the information in a bulletin format so that it makes for easier reading:

Of Shoes & Money

I bought a pair of shoes from the Metro Expo Sales recently. The shoes cost $99 which to me is quite expensive though the shoes are already at a 30% discount off its original price. As I need the shoes (my old shoes were torn) and the shoes are the only ones which suit me, I bought the shoes.

A habit that makes me financially unhappy

I aim to be a more disciplined investor this year. Last year, I got carried away with some investment themes that cause my portfolio not to perform well. This is one habit that I want to improve on: financial and investment discipline. I thought that this is one habit that I want to improve on till I thought that there is one more habit which I believe I should improve on as well and that is nonetheless the habit of comparing my financial status with my better-off peers.

Kris Energy stock

Kris Energy stock went south by 27% to $0.86 on 13 January 2014 from $1.17 after Kris Energy company reported that it will not be proceeding with its well operations in Vietnam. To put it simply, Kris Energy is an oil exploration company and one of the wells that it has drilled in Vietnam does not yield oil. The Singapore stocks markets did not like the news and responded by pushing Kris Energy stock price south.

OUE C-Reit IPO stock

OUE C-Reit will be launching its IPO at a price of $0.80 per share based on the preliminary prospectus lodged with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). OUE Reit will comprise two properties: the OUE Bayfront property (which include the OUE Bayfront property, the OUE tower and the OUE link) in Singapore and also the Lippo Plaza property in Shanghai, China. I really think that there are too many Reits in the Singapore stocks markets. Not only do we have more and more Reits listed in Singapore, I think we are having more and more companies spin off their assets as various forms of Reits. Take for example, F&N: F&N now has its own Reits after spinning off; SPH has also its own Reits and for OUE, OUE C-Reit is not the only Reit under OUE; OUE Hospitality Reits was the first Reit under OUE.

Eurosports Global Limited IPO stock

Eurosports Global Limited is currently having its IPO. There are 80 million Invitation Shares comprising 40 million New Shares and 40 million Vendor Shares. One and a half million offer shares will be offered to the public at $0.28 each. Eurosports Global Limited IPO will close on 15 January 2014 and will commence trading on a “ready” basis on 17 January 2014.

Review of the Water Snake year 2013 on and the Five Elements of Singapore stocks

Let us review how Singapore stocks fare in the year of the water snake in year 2013. First of all, let us look at what was predicted at the beginning of the year of the water snake.

According to astrologers and Fengshui practitioners, they have predicted that the Water Snake year of 2013 was not a good year for the Singapore stocks markets. How did they arrive at this conclusion? From some of the literature which I have read, some of these astrologer experts have done some kind of reference (yeah, in our technical analysis of stocks, we also do some referencing and back-testing, don’t we?).

Recommended stocks to buy for year 2014: my comments

I know that I have been posting posts on recommended stocks to buy for year 2014. These recommendations are from the analysts reports which I have read as well as my own recommendations. It is really quite common for analysts to come out and give their stock takes and recommendations at the beginning of the year. I have summarized these recommendations on this blog, not that I believe completely what the stock analysts have written but it’s for the purpose of comprehensiveness of this blog.

Irony of my Stocks Investing?

For those of you readers who have followed my posts long enough, you would have known that I am a simple man with simple needs. I do not really pursue life’s luxuries but would like to go for tours if tours are considered as luxuries. You may ask yourself how this opening of the post is relevant to the title of this posting, well it is relevant. But first of all, let me walk you through a simple philosophical exercise so as to understand the basis of this posting.

Goh Eng Yeow’s Small Change: my quick review

Finally, I managed to enter a bookstore this afternoon and quickly went to the “New Arrivals” section and grabbed Goh Eng Yeow’s Small Change, a new financial book. I have read in the newspapers that this book costs $15 and hence I expect to see a thin book. My expectations prove me right as the book is a thin book, but I think it should not undermine the great contents covered in the topics. I opened the contents page and there they are: thirty golden nuggets of financial advice in equal number of chapters. As an avid bookworm, I glanced quickly through the book so as to give a quick review of the book.

Being Rich working for someone

I read The Sunday Times of 5 January 2014 and there are two articles which I would like to refer to in this posting. The first article was an interview with an Engineer-turned-Painter; the interview revolves around questions of the painter’s financial life. The second article was a commentary by one of the newspapers’ journalists, Jonathan. The commentary was about Jonathan’s view of getting rich. I identify a common thread which was discussed in the two articles and the notion is whether one could become rich working for someone.

Goh Eng Yeow’s Small Change & a tribute to Singapore’s financial bloggers

I pretty much enjoy the “Small Change” columns in The Sunday Times by Goh Eng Yeow, a Senior Correspondent of Singapore’s local English newspapers. I am hence pleased that Eng Yeow has compiled a book based on the same name of the columns he has been penning all along based on his wealth of thirty-years of investing experience; “Small Change” retails at bookstores at $15.

Hutchinson Port Holdings (HPH) Trust

I have mentioned before that I like Hutchinson Port Holdings Trust and I have some investments in this counter. Yesterday (3 January 2014), as all the other STI counters retreated south resulting in the STI heading south by 1.36%, one stock closed flat and this stock is none other than Hutchinson Port Holdings (HPH) Trust. This shows that Hutchinson Port Holdings (HPH) Trust is quite a resilient stock.

US Federal Reserves FOMC meetings for year 2014

US Federal Reserves has scaled back its bonds-buying programme from US$85 billion per month to US$75 billion per month in its efforts to slowly taper the Quantitative Easing (QE). In addition to the above, the US Federal Reserves has committed that it will maintain low interest rates. So far, the Singapore stocks’ response to the tapering has been quite okay. I believe Jane Yellen will soon take the helm officially at the Federal Reserves. We should see how Jane Yellen taper the QE next and how the global stock markets including Singapore’s will respond.

According to an analyst report which I have read, these are the dates of the Federal Reserves FOMC meetings for year 2014:

Singapore-listed companies to hold AGMs in Singapore & other possible new regulations for year 2014

Some market watchers are expecting that there will possibly be new regulations rolled out by SGX for the year 2014. First of all, commencing year 2014, companies listed in Singapore, be it on the SGX or Catalist need to hold their AGMs in Singapore. I welcome this new regulation if it is introduced as being a long-term investor of Noble Group stock, I am always nonchalant when I open the letter from Noble Group company, informing me that the AGM will be held in Hong Kong. Though I like to tour Hong Kong, I am not ready to fly to Hong Kong on my own budget just to attend the Noble’s Group AGM; hence I am really interested to attend Noble Group AGM if it is held in Singapore. I welcome this possible new regulation.

How to get the most returns from your monies?

I updated my bank book this morning and looked at the amount of bank interest I earned for the year 2013. I was really quite surprised when I looked at the interest sum earned on my deposits. The interest was really very low and I really think that the interest rate has headed south by a fair bit. I mean, I do not expect to see a good amount of bank interest earned as we are in an economy of low interest rates. But the bank interest rate is really very unimpressive and I think, based on my calculation, the interest rate is around 0.025%!
