Singapore stocks commentary: 31 March 2014

Today is the final trading day of the first quarter for year 2014. Year to this quarter, the STI has performed quite well, I must say.

This morning, there was news reported that the two Koreas exchanged some fire, and I think this may shape how stocks perform if the two Koreas continue in these kind of actions. The political situation in Ukraine may be under control but we should see how the Korean peninsula is shaping up. Politics, economical factors and nature are but just some of the factors that shape stocks performance. Singapore being too small a country is a price taker and not a price maker and hence any volatility in the global stocks markets will be felt by Singapore.

Singapore Stocks Review: 24 March 14 to 28 March 14

In the week of 24 March 14 to 28 March 14, the Singapore Stocks Index STI rallied remarkably and I singled out four stocks which performed not only in line with the STI but which performed even more!

Noble Group stock rallied up 13.6% for the above week, this rise in my belief was simply overwhelming for Noble Group though on the corporate front, there was some announcement of setting up of some like of commodities trust for the group. I sold off all my stocks in Noble Group as I think though the stock may be on the uptrend, it will have to do so slowly.

Top global Singapore IT stock?

Singtel stock and SPH stock are traditionally blue-chip stocks. Singtel is one of the three local players in the telecom industry, offering mainly mobile, phone and internet services while SPH is the largest press publication industry in Singapore. Disparate as these two companies can be, they have a common thread in their businesses, which is none other than Information.

SMRT stock

While SMRT stock may not be doing well, I read the report that SMRT has signed an agreement with Huawei to develop some e-commerce products. The foray of SMRT into an area which is not its core business in rails, trains and buses may be surprising to others, but I am not really surprised as this is not the first non-core venture that SMRT has entered into. To cite an example, SportsHub has SMRT as one of its key investors too. It only make sense for SMRT to diversify its business always from the railway business as a listed company to grow its business, especially now that the ageing railway systems and trains are causing some train glitches here and there and SMRT has been tapping into its reserves for the maintenance of the system.

Noble Group Stock: my winning stock

Noble Group stock closed 5% higher yesterday at $1.155. I sold off Noble Group stock today (27 March 2014), pocketing quite noble profits (pun not intended). I have checked that the spectacular run-up in Noble Group stock price was not driven by announcements of the company, rather, the heading north of the stock was in line with the picture of the overall stocks direction locally.

My Zen-like Investing

Around me, there are folks who are quite fixated with the monitoring of stock prices daily or even intra-day. Some of them like to comment out loud how they have picked a winning stock while behaving or “behaving” “secretive” and comment how their trading methods are that accurate. There are also many instances of how stock prices head south the moment investors enter their positions and how stock prices head north the moment investors sell their positions; and these cause the investors to act in the opposite manner (buy or sell) soon.

Of Money and Stress

I read the report that says that city dwellers are more prone to stress. Let me give you one reason why we city dwellers are stressed: most of the stress has to do with MONEY.

First work. I really think that many of us face stress related to work. Though the nature of work varies across individuals, it is a common feature that many of us work very long hours at work as can be seen in the many executives returning back home at late hours every working day. This can be one form of stress. But what do we work for? The answer is MONEY!

Rich Dad Financial advantage

After reading this post, you may feel sceptical and think that I am cynical but I would think that the “Rich Dad Financial Advantage” if I may coin this term is quite applicable for some. So what is the “Rich Dad Financial Advantage?” Well, I have a friend who needs not look for a good and proper job like the many of us but turn to become a motivational speaker and pursue his interest. In the media, it is expressed indirectly that the rat race does not matter to him and that he likes to pursue his interest. Well, it may not be known to even many that he hails from a rich family: his father owns some factories and possibly my friend is already a multi-millionaire through the giving of some “pocket monies” by his father.

F&N stock: Fraser and Neave to acquire Yoke Industries

F&N (Fraser and Neave) announced after trading hours on 21 March 2014 that it would be acquiring a 70% stake in Yoke Food industries, a Malaysia-based beverages company. I am not surprised that F&N will be carrying out acquisitions as it is quite clear after that now F&N is growing its food & beverage businesses after divesting all the other non-beverage businesses. The acquisition will increase F&N’s presence in Indonesia and Cambodia.

$100,000 performance bonus?

$100,000 to many of us is a good sum of money, hence when someone receives $100,000 as his performance bonus, on top of his basic salary, it is quite an enviable sum to many of the people earning average incomes. Most of us receive our performance bonuses in the leagues of thousands or tens of thousands, hence to receive at least hundreds of thousands of dollars in performance bonuses, one will feel simply great.

What is the Singapore Stocks Markets doing?

Currently, I am not making any more investments into the Singapore stocks markets until I have a better picture of the movement of the stocks. I mean most of the stocks are now trading in a manner which is not really expected by traders and investors. Take for example, Yongnam stock; Yongnam announced that it has secured some very good contracts yesterday, after trading hours, but let us take a look at Yongnam stock today. Yongnam stock went up from $0.225 to $0.23 and then closed back at $0.225, unchanged at the end of today’s session.

Eurosports IPO stock

I watched Money Mind on 16 March 2014 which featured Eurosports company, the company which distributes luxury cars like Lamborginis in Singapore. Under the new host Dawn Tan, Money Mind has taken on a much more Singapore-centric format which I really appreciate for the previous seasons of Money Mind has segments that were more on overseas markets. Hence I look forward to watching every episode of Money Mind as I find this current season of the financial programme is more relevant to me as an investor who invests in Singapore stocks; though I do not know how many investors watch Money Mind due to Dawn Tan too (anyway Dawn Tan is fronting the week-nightly Business Singapore which I watch too).

How McDonalds Free Egg Mcmuffins helps me in my Investments

This morning, McDonalds gave out one-hundred-and-twenty-thousands of Free Egg Mac-muffins across its outlets in Singapore to mark the “All-Day Breakfast” today (17 March 2014). This promotion event was publicised across the mass media last week and when I heard of the drive, I did not think too much of it as I knew certainly that there would be large flocks of people queuing for the freebies egg mac-muffins. Along my way to work today, however I decided to just “try my luck” at getting this free egg mac-muffin as I passed by a McDonalds outlet. The queue at the outlet was quite decent and from the time of queuing to getting my free egg mac-muffins, it was quite fast. I munched hungrily at the mac-muffin, happy at what McDonalds has given me for free and grateful for the free breakfast.

Olam stocks: Buy, Hold or Sell?

Temasek Holdings has bought over Olam at $2.23 per share and Olam stock is currently trading at $2.23. Different from other “buy-overs”, Olam stock will not be delisted but will continue to trade on the Singapore Stocks Exchange. I believe the question on investors’ minds is to hold or sell Olam stocks if they have Olam stocks currently. For investors who are interested in Olam stocks, the question on their minds will be whether to buy Olam stock as the thinking is that Olam stock price may go higher with Temasek Holdings as the owner of Olam.

Buying Insurance, Buying Medishield, Buying Integrated MediShield Plan

There exist so many insurance products on the market these days that a layman can find it difficult to decide whether or not to buy a whole-life insurance, integrated medishield plan, investment-linked product, an endowment product or other products. I have a whole-life insurance, two endowment, one term insurance and an integrated shield plan.

Temasek buys Olam stocks

Temasek bought Olam stocks, this was the news which greeted investors after Olam lifted its trading halt this morning. As a result of Temasek’s purchase, Olam stock price headed north even further beyond $2 a share. Temasek’s purchase of Olam stocks lent some excitement on the local bourse which has been seeing lacklustre trading. Prior to Temasek’s offer and purchase, the four local commodities stocks (WONG or GOWN) depending which stock you list first: Wilmar, Olam, Noble Group and Golden Agriculture have been enjoying rallies in their stock prices with a consumer-hungry China company acquiring stakes in Noble Group. Analysts have then given their take that WONG in this order will benefit from China and the global consumption of commodities.

Of Remisiers and Stocks

The number of remisiers in Singapore has gone south according to a report which I read today. The new set of rules and regulations introduced by SGX governing brokerage firms caused more and more remisiers to switch jobs, according to the report. In particular, the reduction in the “settlement period” of trades means that speculation activities within the stocks markets may have been contained. Fuelling the southward direction of trading volumes was the fact that there might be a potential measure for traders to put up as collaterals some percentages of their trading amounts for their trades.

Blumont, Asiasons and LionGold stocks?

Yesterday, Blumont, Asiasons and LionGold saw their stock prices surge by quite a large percentage points. If you could recall, these three stocks had their value go down by as much as ninety-percentages in October last year. For example, Blumont’s stock price went all the way from two dollars plus per share to the current few cents per share. So is the rally in Blumont, Asiasons and LionGold a signal for investors to enter and buy these stocks?

Time to book my investment profits?

This afternoon, I spent quite some time looking at stock prices “live” on my brokerage website. In particular, I was looking at the prices of the counters which I have invested. So why was I looking at the stock prices of these counters “live”? Well, it was due to the fact that quite a number of these stock counters were now trading above my cost, hence I was really looking at these stock prices, taking information into my head and deciding whether it is time to book out my profits.

Singapore’s Billionaires

Forbes has released its list of the world’s billionaires. For Singapore, the list has sixteen Singaporean billionaires. This list excludes foreign billionaires who are living in Singapore, for example, the Brazilian founder of Facebook. Those who are in the Singapore’s list are locally born Singaporeans. And hence there are more than sixteen billionaires amidst all of us (five million population) living on this tiny island. And if we are to count the number of millionaires here, there are really many thousands of them here.

My Life as a Retail Trader

Dear Reader, Thank You for reading my post. I would like to Thank you even more if you are a frequent reader of my humble blog. I was thinking of sharing my experience as a retail trader with you today. Unlike some of the authors of financial blogs whom you have read that proclaims the authors are millionaires, I am pretty much a typical retail trader who have a full-time work in the day.

Singapore Haze & PSI: which stocks to buy and not to buy?

This post is about Singapore Haze and which stocks to buy and which stocks not to buy. When I woke up this morning, I saw really thick haze outside my house. Immediately, I went to switch on my television set to understand more about the PSI reading. I was quite surprised to see that the 3-hours PSI reading was 36. Well, the PSI reading does not really correspond to what I saw of the haze outside my house but I think it could be due to result of the 3-hours computation.

How to win in stock trading?

In the market, there are so many fanciful technical indicators and charting software that it is overwhelming for traders and investors. When I first started my investment journey, I read and read literature of fundamental and technical analysis and even pored through company reports. I borrowed books on trading and investment from library, attended many investment seminars and talks, learned about the many different classes of investment such as Forex, Futures, Hedge Funds, experimented with charting software amidst others.

The different Psychology & Economics of Stock Investing

As a seasoned investor, I find that the markets are really quite fascinated with trading software; you know those types of trading software which have colourful candlesticks, many sloping lines and illustration like these. And that is probably why the companies behind these software keep advertising their offerings on the newspapers in the forms of free seminars. It is a psychological effect for investors to feel excited over these trading softwares which are often touted as very accurate prediction models as people always think that there is value behind those things that they do not understand.

Singapore: the world’s most expensive city

Singapore has been ranked the world’s most expensive city, according to a report. When I read this news, I am a bit surprised as though I believe that the cost of living in Singapore is high, all along I have not thought that Singapore is the world’s most expensive city.

The ranking does not include the cost of public transport and the cost of housing, two areas which I identify as still quite affordable for most of Singaporeans.

I think the following are expensive in Singapore:

(a) Dining: a plate of rice or noodles costs easily at least $3.50 and the amount is still not sufficient to fill my stomach.

Ukraine political situation & Stock Markets

Singapore markets headed south yesterday (3 March 2014) against the backdrop of the situation in Ukraine, in tandem with other markets. The performance of China’s PMI also contributed to the performance of global stock markets. So apart from the usual economic factors and decisions from US, China and Europe, we have a new factor of a new nature coming into the equation of investments and that is political “turmoil” (not sure whether I use the correct word “turmoil’). The last time I remember factors of such nature came into the investment picture was the political situation in Libya (remember Gaffafi?) and that was back in year 2010, if I could still remember correctly.

How to increase your income?

Dear Reader
A Good Day to you and I welcome you to this article.
The fact that you are reading this article shows that you want to increase your level of wealth. Indeed, whether you are currently working or not, young or old, you will most likely welcome more wealth for there are really more good reasons than not for being more wealthy.
Being wealthy means that we can provide a higher standard of material living for yourself and your love ones. With more wealth, we will most likely be able to buy the dream house that we like to stay, take that long and relaxing overseas vacations with our family and even reach that level of financial status when we can “no need to work” for a living. Even if we do not reach that level of financial freedom, with more wealth, we will most likely need not “work that hard”, need not work that many long hours and instead have more free time to spend with our love ones and have more free time to spend on our hobbies which we are passionate about? Is this not what many people are trying to achieve in terms of financial goals?

How Natas, IT Show and Food Expo also created value for people who did not visit these fairs?

There were not many people in Orchard Road and City Hall last weekends. Where are all the people? I asked myself. Then it occurred to me that over the last weekends, there were three mega-sized exhibitions occurring at different parts of the island. These exhibitions were the Natas Fair at the Expo, the IT Show at Marina Bay Sands convention centre and the Food Expo at Suntec City. I really felt that these three well-loved fairs drew a lot of crowds away from the usual-bustling streets of Orchard Road and City Hall.

Stocks which I bought in February 2014

This is a post on the stocks which I purchased in February 2014. Going forward, I will be sharing with readers the stocks which I buy on a monthly basis, if any. For the month of February 2014, I bought three blue-chip stocks, as I shall elaborate further below.

Financial Management Blog

I have started this blog to share my experiences of investing and trading in the Singapore Stock Market. Investment or trading, in my belief, is an activity that everyone should master or at the very least, participate, as in today’s world, saving for a rainy day is no longer enough. Why is that so?
